Health Insurance for the Independent

One type of health insurance you can purchase is a High Deductible Health Plan, or HDHP. As the name implies, you have to pay high annual deductibles before your coverage begins, but you do receive lower than normal premium rates. The plan will cover your major medical expenses, so you are liable for minor expenses rendered. To help with your other medical expenses, you can invest the money saved from your low premiums into an HSA, or Health Savings Account. It offers tax-exempt interests and tax-deferred money to withdraw for your medical bills. You can use the funds you invest for any type of procedures, including alternative medical services, chiropractic, dental and vision.

You are required to have a High Deductible Health Plan to be eligible for an HSA. Also included with the HSA is the ability to withdraw the funds for retirement once you reach the appropriate age (depends on the state you live in).

Another option is to purchase a medical discount plan. You will have a list of participants to go to for reduced rates on doctor visits and prescription drugs. The monthly rates are low and all depend on the amount of dependents placed on the plan.
